Surfer Boys

The surf scene is full of talented surfer boys and surfer dudes, with many being cute surfer boys sporting cute surfer dude buns. Surfer guys come from all around the world; there are American surfers and Australian surfer boys and others. Many, however, have at least spent some time living in some of the hottest surf spots in the world, including California, Australia and Hawaii.

One of the iconic male surfers was Eddie Aikau, born in Hawaii. Aikau was also a lifeguard besides being a big wave surfer; indeed, while he was lifeguard on the North Shore of Honolulu not one life was lost thanks to the fact that Aikau would even handle surf that reached above 20 feet in height. He made a name of himself by surfing huge Hawaiian waves and won countless surfing awards. In 1978, he joined the Polynesian Voyaging Society’s expedition to follow the supposed ancient route that the Polynesians took between Tahiti and Hawaii; Aikau paddled away on his surfboard to get help when the vessel capsized and was never heard from again, though the rest of the crew was rescued.

Simon Anderson is an Australian surf boy who also shapes surfboards; this surfer dude is actually credited with creating the surfboard design called the Thruster, which uses three fins of equal sizes; nowadays the thruster model is found on virtually every shortboard constructed. This surfer guy had a very graceful yet powerful style and a very laid-back attitude. He won a variety of competitions in the late 70s but was overpowered by the new twin fin surfboard design; after seeing the twin fin, Anderson experimented with various board designs and ended up creating the thruster. With this design, Anderson had the intention of keeping the maneuverability of a twin-fin, but adding to it the drive and stability of a single fin. This design allowed Anderson to win a number of competitions.

Jeff Clark is another surfer boy (though he was born in 1957) and is a highly respected big wave surfer. He has become famous for discovering Mavericks, a now world-renowned surfing location in Northern California, and surfing it in relative solitude for nearly 15 years before it was discovered by other big wave surfers. This legend among surf boys is most likely the only active ambidextrous big wave surfer in the world; in fact, he’s only one a very few in all of surfing history.

There are obviously many more surfing boys that have distinguished themselves one way or another. Many who are now well-known surfer teenage boys will most likely go on to be the big champions of tomorrow and so many more legendary surf boys will be added to the roll call. The Beach Boys and Surfing USA made icons out of surfers and the entire surfing industry; the attraction for surfing has grown and will continue doing so.
