Others

As usual, a full discussion on surfing also includes other topics, not just the ones mentioned until now. These “others” include simple things like surfing pictures and surfing wallpaper; these are obviously just some of the numerous ways that you can enjoy the sport when you’re not in the water and that you can show your love of the sport. And what discussion on surfing would be complete without a little bit more detail on surfing waves, what to expect from surfing and surfing safety?

You can find surfing pictures and surfing wallpaper virtually everywhere on the Internet. You’ll find female and male surfers, professional surfers and new surfers, surfers performing amazing feats and surfers getting wiped out. You’ll find pictures and wallpaper of different locations and different waves; you can even take your own pictures and upload them onto the Internet for others to view or even use as wallpaper.

In surfing, it’s all about the waves; or better, it’s all about the ocean that makes the waves. Indeed, the actual action of surfing the waves is one of the most exhilarating experiences for the overwhelming majority of people that venture into the sport. Actually, surfers have a particular word for the joy that is felt towards surfing waves: “stoke”.

But where there is joy, there is sometimes pain. Though many new surfers are worried about shark encounters and shark attacks, meeting up with these ocean predators is actually not that common; in fact, statistics show that, even if you’re a surfer, you’re much more likely to be struck by lightning than be bitten by a shark. Actually, more than sharks, beginners should worry about their own boards.

If you’re a beginner, you’re going to be trying out your surfing knowledge with small waves; you may fall while learning (actually, count on it) and you may get hit by your board. Your surfboard is quite hard and getting hit with it will often hurt. A good piece of advice is to never fall onto your board, but fall off it. Also, be careful not to get hit by the fins of the board, as these can cut you and require you to get stitches.

While there are risks in surfing, as with any other sport, respecting some safety precautions will help minimize those risks. You need to get to know the beach and the waves you will be surfing; you should especially know where rocks, reefs or any other jagged, dangerous structures are. Make sure you understand the workings of the current and never go out to a point where you won’t be able to swim back without your board.
