Flip Skateboards
Flip Skateboards is a skateboard company that is internationally based and owned by Geoff Rowley, Ian Deacon and Jeremy Fox; it is distributed by Blitz. Flip skateboard company produces skateboard decks and wheels, but also markets clothing.
The company was started in the 1980s, in England, under the name Deathbox Skateboards; deathbox refers to the swimming pool overflow channel in backyard pool skating. The company changed its name to Flip in 1991. In 1994, the Flip skateboarding company moved to California and the team followed the year after. Flip skateboards is now one of the largest and most well known skateboarding companies in the world.
Four team members have won the Thrasher Skater of the Year Award and the majority of team members are legendary; Lance Mountain is a skateboard veteran, Geoff Rowley, Tom Penny and Mark Appleyard are legends in the street skating world and Rune Glifberg and Bob Burnquist are legends in the vertical skateboarding arena.
Ali Boulala is another renowned skateboarder on the Flip team, who is currently out of commission, though, due to a very serious motorcycle accident which left another member of the team dead. His style is very flamboyant and he prefers to concentrate his skateboarding on the “unusual”; he was most often found skating spots that had never been filmed and experimenting at creating his own tricks or modifying ones already in existence. He has been featured in a number of Flip’s skateboarding videos.
Reviews are mixed concerning the quality and efficacy of Flip skateboard decks and complete Flip skateboard models. Some skaters claim that these boards have very poor pop and are quite heavy; their heaviness makes them somewhat difficult to control and perform tricks with properly. Skaters have complained that they are sluggish and feel “fake.” Some people also find fault with their concave. Other people question their durability, stating that their paint easily chips, the Flip skateboard deck warps easily and the board breaks during medium level tricks; it’s been noted that they don’t last as long as other boards.
Others claim that the pop is either decent or of high quality, and the board is strong. Some have stated that even if their pop is not excellent, these boards have very good flip. People in favor of Flip boards have also claimed that they are strong and do not break easily; they’ve been used successfully on halfpipes and going down ramps. Claims have been made that Flip boards are good for technical skateboarding.
