Element Skateboards
Element Skateboards was founded in 1992 in Atlanta Georgia; it was originally established with the company name Underworld Element, but decided to just go by the name “Element.” Billabong International bought the Element skateboard company in 2001. The Element Skateboards logo is a tree, in stick figure style, within two circles; most frequently, the tree and the circles are white, while the background is red.
This logo is a representation of the life of natural wood, along with the feeling of being “one” with the board. Sometimes, along with the encircled tree, the words “wind, water, fire and earth” are also found circling the Element skateboard logo; these are the four basic elements and make reference to the company’s name, Element.
One of Element’s classic offerings are the Featherlight products. This line is designed and constructed with extremely light materials, yet it is still able to maintain strength and quality. The Featherlight collection includes not only Element skateboard decks and wheels, but also Element skateboard parts, like bearings, and clothing, like Element skateboard shirts.
Element Skate boards also prides itself on its innovative approach to deck construction. Indeed, they’ve come up with Helium, a revolutionary new technology consisting of the use of patented air-frame chambers within the Element skateboard deck; this construction has the advantage of giving added strength to the board while at the same time providing for a substantial decrease in its weight.
To create the air-frame chambers (of which there are five), the Element skateboarding deck is hollowed and so less wood actually goes into making the board; this causes the reduction in weight. Strength is increased through the shape of the board, which disperses normal skateboarding stress in an equal manner through the entire deck. The material used is traditional US hard rock maple.
Besides offering decks and wheels, Element Skateboards also offers clothing and, in 2006, released its own footwear under the brand name Element Footwear. There are a variety of different styles of shoes made and marketed under this brand name. Element Footwear is also divided into distinct collections under the headings earth, wind, water and fire.
Alongside the marketing aspect of the company, Element has also created an organization called Element Awareness, dedicated to promoting conservation and survival skills, especially to youths, using the appeal of skateboarding. Yet another aim intended for the company is the promotion of the sport of skateboarding itself; this is done by providing skate camps with scholarships, organizing trips to professional facilities for kids and letting young skaters meet with the pros.
