Skateboard Shops
Obviously, any sport that requires gear (pretty much all sports) needs to have a place where enthusiasts can go to purchase that gear. Paintball has paintball stores, scuba diving has scuba shops. Skateboarding is no different; there are a number of skateboard shops around the country where you can buy all different types of skateboard gear.
Initially, skateboarders were forced to search for their skateboards and other limited gear at surf shops; indeed, skateboarding initiated as a non-water version of surfing. But as skateboarding gained in popularity, skaters and skating enthusiasts bought merchandise in increasing numbers; this led to the creation of special skateboard stores, separate from surf shops. The first skate shops popped up on the West Coast, especially in California; they eventually spread to the East Coast and then throughout the country.
The primary merchandise at a skateboard shop is obviously comprised of skateboards. Besides skateboards, though, there are a whole variety of products available, from clothing to shoes and from skate videos to skate stickers. Indeed, there are some shops that seem more like skateboarding clothing stores or a skateboard shoe shop, rather than a shop that sells skateboards.
Skate shops, even the skateboard clothing shops, often don’t stop at offering products, though. There are a number of skate shops that have skateboard “technicians” on board, who can help you repair the mechanical parts of your board, or tell you what’s wrong and how to repair it yourself. There are also technicians that can enhance your board’s capabilities.
A skateboard store does much more than offer products or professional services, though. First of all, it is a precious source of information for beginner skateboarders who aren’t sure what kind of board to buy; even veteran skaters can talk to someone at a skateboarding shop for advice on how to improve their board and/or their skateboarding. Skate shops are also great places where skaters can hang out, meet other skaters and share their passion for skating. Many skate shops are next to or affiliated with skate parks where skaters get a chance to do some intense skating.
Finally, with the growing popularity and convenience of the Internet, many online skateboard shops have popped up as well. While there are some drawbacks to an online skateboard shop, like not being able to look at what you buy or the absence of personal contact, they are very convenient. Anyone, no matter where they live, can get skateboarding gear. Plus, many online skateboard stores are trying to remedy shortcomings; for example, many offer live help during certain hours.
